Watch the Watchmen!

From the moment I saw the first Watchmen teaser last summer, I knew I had to see it. A lot of people were put off by the music by the Smashing Pumpkins because it reminded them of the horrible flop that was Nipple Suit and Robin. For those of you who have yet to see it, there is no further relationship between the two movies (other than Ozzymandias also wearing a slightly nippy suit) so there's no need to fear. Overall, the movie is true to the graphic novel, is a visual marvel and has a ridiculously appropriate soundtrack.

I saw the movie in its IMAX format, but hopefully the visuals are as tantalizing in the regular version. The colours were very bright and strong, very much of a comic book style, and the costumes were designed well enough to be believable as crime fighting attire. The costumes were very similar to the ones in the comics except in the case of Ozzymandias, but I guess Snyder felt that silk-like textile wasn't appropriate for the film, which I guess I can agree on. In the comic, Dr. Manhattan spends most of his time in the nude, surprisingly the movie embraces this and Dr. Manhattan is often showed completely nude, accompanied with realistic flopping physics (let's leave it at that).

If you have been following news concerning the movie online, it's likely that you already know that the ending has been modified. Don't worry, you won't find any spoilers here, but let's just say that I found this ending to be much less random (even with all the recurring hints) than the one in the comic book, which makes sense for a movie rendition of the story where it would likely have been too strange and unbelievable of an ending for people who haven't read the novel.
Zack Snyder's rendition of the classic
comic is a visual gem!

In a recent interview with Rotten Tomatoes, Snyder stated that he had had the soundtrack planned out since before the movie. After seeing the movie, I don't doubt it; the music selection is unexpected, but totally appropriate with the scenes. From Bob Dylan's "The Times Are A-Changin'" to Nena's "99 Luftballoons", viewers are treated to incredibly powerful tracks where often the lyrics are synced to on-screen events. Jimi Hendrix's "All Along the Watchtower" was one of those, but I won't go into further details.

Whether or not you are a fan of the Watchmen or comic book movies in general, this is a movie to see, if only for the eye and ear candy. I personally liked it so much I think I'll be going to see it again! The only complaint I have is the poor acting on the part of Carla Gugino (AKA Sally Jupiter/ Silk Spectre) and her in-film daughter Malin Akerman (AKA Laurie Jupiter / Silk Spectre II) in their scenes together. There was something unatural in their interactions, it seemed too artificial and rehearsed (which it obviously was, but as actors they're expected to convince the viewer that it's not).

Other than that, this movie is Adje-approved! Also, for those interested, Snyder also mentioned in his interview that "Tales of the Black Freighter" will be available in DVD format and will be some sort of cell-shaded movie.

Damnit Nam! You should be writing reviews professionally!

SPOILERS

The 'Watchmen' film has recieved mixed reviews -- mixed positive and mixed negative, both of which are accurate. The praise is well-deserved, the criticisms too. A friend of mine wrote, "A wiser man than myself concluded that Snyder knocked out of the park that which seemed unfilmable from the novel, and failed explosively in the scenes which should have been easiest."

On the one hand, Snyder shows remarkably good judgement -- casting talented unknowns as his main actors, for instance, and Snyder's exceeding faithfulness to the graphic novel. Snyder is remarkably attuned to the characters of Rorschach and Dr Manhattan, and each are terribly alive on screen. After his argument with Laurie, Dr Manhattan's duplicates re-integrate into himself, as he looks on in muted melancholy -- an unnerving, mystical sequence that bristles the hairs on your neck. "Don't worry John. She'll be back." "No. She won't." The film's greatest moment is Dr Manhattan's falshback/origin scenes: beautifully conceived and executed, precisely narrated, told from the point of view of someone who sees past & present simultaneously, and scored to Philip Glass music. "...we were introduced by a friend of mine. It is 1981 and he dies of cancer. It is 1962 and one month from now the accident will occur. I feel fear for the last time. She buys me a beer; it is the first time a woman does this for me. I tell her I will always love her, and as I lie to her, it is 1981 and a young woman looks fondly at me..."

On the other hand, it's obvious that he's a rookie filmmaker -- his direction is sloppy, the pace of his editing feels more "accidental" than purposeful, and it lacks a unifying artistic vision. Despite the sensual colors and pristine visual gleam, 'Watchmen' is... strangely uncompelling. Near the end of the film, Snyder handles a flashback to New Yorkian apocalypse with as much grace as 'Gigli' or 'You Got Served'. Remember how much you cared for the characters at the end of 'Casino Royale'? Remember how your heart sank at the climax of 'The Dark Knight'? Well, with regards to Carla Gugino and Malin Akerman at the end of 'Watchmen' -- in a scene that goes on for days -- all I wanted to do was remove their fingernals under torture. Analyze the filmmaking of Christopher Nolan for thirty seconds and you'll notice how much more controlled his direction and editing are (even in his rookie indie films like 'Following' he displays higher cinematic mastery than Snyder does).

Watchmen is too complicated a topic to do justice in a single topic reply.

It was a great movie. Even better if you have read the comic!

"and the costumes were designed well enough to be believable as crime fighting attire"

Alright - I'll give you that the costumes made sense, however Laurie Jupiter's hair was like 5 feet long - and down most of the time... People would be grabbing onto that by accident during a fight and her neck would break in a second....

Also - I unfortunately have to disagree with the choice of 99 Luftballons for that scene... a great song, but I felt it was extremely out of place... WAIT!

I just looked up the wiki on the song, and I have learned that it is a "cold-war era protest song from '83" - nevermind.. decent choice.

Also - there seems to be a lack of mention of penis in your review - this, I believe, made the movie!

:P
